Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:

  1. List the 5 major types of roof products available including new materials and installation techniques as well as the old standby, for both new or replacement roofs.
  2. Describe the criteria and compliance requirements that comprise a “cool roof.”
  3. Identify the roofing details that are critical to a long roof life and what construction techniques can be implemented at the re-roofing phase.
  4. Determine when and if all of the existing roof top equipment must be removed and replaced to allow for the re-roofing.
  5. Recognize if the original roof needs to be removed (because of excessive weight) or if a roof replacement can be used over the existing surface.
  6. Compare the budgetary differences between the standard 5 most commonly used roofing systems?
  7. Specify the basic annual maintenance tasks that should be scheduled.
  8. Explore the following: how the owner or architect addresses the non-drainage areas (“bird baths”), roofing standards and detailing that will maintain the roofs impervious nature, and when are “crickets” required.
  9. Evaluate the existing sheet metal flashing and drains and discover when they need to be replaced.
