BACKGROUND

The AIA believes that awards programs should be carefully structured so that selection and recognition of winners serve two distinct purposes: to the profession and to the public. By focusing attention on a broad range of exemplary activity within the profession, the general quality of architectural practice is elevated and a standard of excellence is established against which all architects and professionals can measure their own performance. By informing the public on the breadth and value of architectural practice, the entire profession is held in higher esteem.

ELIGIBILITY & REQUIREMENTS

The Distinguished Service Awards recognize those individuals or firms who have provided exemplary service to the Chapter within the last twelve months. Please review the eligibility requirements and descriptions specific to each award shown below.

To nominate a fellow Member or Member Firm, fax your completed nomination form(s) to AIA San Diego at 619.232.4542 by Friday, August 15, 2008.

AWARD DESCRIPTIONS

  • Honorary Membership Award

Awarded annually to a person of esteemed character who is otherwise ineligible for membership in The Institute or this Chapter but who has rendered distinguished service to the profession of architecture or the arts and sciences within the territory of this Chapter. The nomination should include the nominee's biography, a history of attainments, and qualifications for the honor and the reasons for the nomination. The Board of Directors, at any of its regular meetings, after the nomination of a person for honorary affiliate membership, may admit such person as an honorary affiliate member. Not more than one honorary affiliate member shall be elected in any one calendar year.

  • Public Service Award

Awarded to an AIA San Diego Member for an exemplary contribution of service to the San Diego community at large.

  • Distinguished Service Awards

Recognizes an AIA San Diego Member or Firm that, by his /her professionalism, dedication, ability and commitment, has advanced the common goals of AIA San Diego.

There are six (6) Distinguished Service Awards offered, categorized by Membership level:

  • Allied Member
  • Architect Member
  • Associate Member
  • Student Member
  • Emeritus Member
  • Member Firm

  • Distinguished Service Award for Sustainability (NEW this year!!)

Awarded to an AIA San Diego Member or Firm that continually promotes the progression of sustainable design in their practice and has advanced the common goals of AIA San Diego.

Award considerations include:

  • Adopts sustainable practices within their own office environment
  • Built or un-built projects that demonstrate sustainable design concepts
  • Projects that demonstrate innovative/creative design solutions
  • Judging criteria will include standard industry sustainable design practices including, but not limited to: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, and Innovation & Design Process.

  • Certificate of Appreciation

Awarded by the AIA San Diego membership to any individual or organization for their contribution and/or commitment to AIA San Diego during the past 12 months.

The Distinguished Service Awards will be presented at the Annual Membership Meeting (September 2008).
