Top 10 ADA Infractions: How to avoid getting sued

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- List the top 10 ADA infractions in architecture and ways to avoid them when designing in California.
- Demonstrate the importance of proper signage, ramps, barriers and other access areas as it relates to ADA and current building codes.
- Discuss specific examples of the top 10 from past cases with photos, selected field sketches and building code diagrams.
- Examine real-life examples of complaints filed with exact references and language to prepare architects for avoiding lawsuits.
PRESENTER: Paul A. Joelson, AIA, CSI, CASp, a licensed architect, certified access specialist, general contractor and certified building inspector, Joelson has specialized in the reconstruction design and management, ADA compliance assessments and quality control consulting during a 37 year career. Over the last 15 years, he has provided consulting and expert services on the following issues- distressed properties in litigation; disputes over architect, developer, builder and subcontractor performance; repair plans with cost estimates and management to implement reconstruction programs. Joelson holds a bachelor of architecture from San Diego’s NewSchool of Architecture and Design and is a member of AIA San Diego, Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), and Forensic Consultants Association- San Diego (FCA).
