The American Institute of Architects San Diego chapter has selected a jury for the organization's 2010 Design Awards.
Architects Randy Brown, Christine Royal and Gwynne Pugh will travel to San Diego to select the best architecture projects of the year and provide commentary during the June 19 awards gala.
Brown serves as principal of Randy Brown Architects in his home state of Nebraska. He received the AIA National Young Architect Prize in 2002 and is a Fellow of the AIA.
Royal practices architecture in Newport, R.I., where she focuses on historic preservation, adaptive reuse, sustainable design and mixed-use projects. She received the AIA's 2010 Young Architect Award and the 2001 William and Thomas Gilbane Project Achievement Award.
Pugh serves as principal and cofounder of Santa Monica, Calif.-based Pugh + Scarpa. He has designed projects for Los Angeles Community College District, Santa Monica College and the Getty Conservation Institute, as well as numerous cities and institutions.
This year, judges were chosen based on suggestions by AIA San Diego members.
"We solicited suggestions from the membership via survey and nomination, and we were ultimately rewarded with a jury that expands upon, and in many cases exceeds the diversity of the juries in the past," said Bryan Acomb, design awards committee chair.
This year AIA San Diego is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Design Awards program. In celebration, this year's ceremony will include a Member's Choice Award, selected from the last 50 years of award-winning buildings.
"We are very excited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our Design Awards event," said AIA Board Member Greg McClure. "We have a great history of memorable jury members and this year will surely be as equally impressive. It has been a challenging year for a lot of local architects, and we feel it is important to come together to celebrate good design."
The AIA San Diego 2010 Design Awards Gala will be held Saturday, June 19 from 8 to 10:30 p.m. at the Neurosciences Institute in La Jolla. For more information visit www.aiasandiego.org/event/design-awards or call (619) 232-0109.
